2020 FOUNDATION CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

DONATE

Season’s Greetings from the officers, directors, and members of the Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the leadership team of the BADC Foundation (collectively, the “BADC”).  We hope that you and your loved ones are staying healthy and safe during these unprecedented times.

There is no question that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented enormous challenges for the BADC and our country. Several of our members or their families have suffered physically, emotionally, or have sustained financial losses because of the virus. Our immediate past president, Dominic Vorv, unexpectedly passed away in October 2020 -- his infectious enthusiasm for everything BADC is an inspiration. All our live events have been cancelled for the foreseeable future. Our office operations have been disrupted while incoming calls to our Lawyer Referral Service have increased.

The BADC and the BADC Foundation have risen to these challenges by adjusting and adapting to new ways of working, learning and promoting the association’s mission. You would be proud of the resilience, can-do spirit, and initiative we see every day among the members of the BADC.

In particular, in response to the pandemic, BADC members this year:

  1. Established the Bankruptcy Access to Justice Pro Bono Project - the first project of its kind in the nation.
  2. Supported grants and donations to legal services organizations that have been hard hit by the pandemic.
  3. Adopted new fiscal policies and procedures to streamline operations and reduce debt.
  4. Formed a Diversity & Inclusion Practice Group Committee.
  5. Hosted or co-hosted a monthly series of virtual CLE and community outreach programs with an emphasis on governance, professionalism, wellness, digital practice transformation and social impact.
  6. Created a history and interactive program to celebrate the BADC's 150th Anniversary Year celebration throughout 2021.

Today, we reach out to you, in the spirit of holiday giving, to offer you the opportunity to invest in the preservation of your voluntary legal experience, to contribute to a permanent presence of the third oldest bar association in the nation, and to provide a continuing central location for the historical library and records of law practice in the District of Columbia from the year 1871 to date.

We have launched the BADC Foundation Capital Campaign to call upon DC's lawyers and firms to help retire the mortgage on the mutually owned office condominium purchased in 2008, located three blocks from the White House on 16th Street at the corner of 16th & K Streets NW. Direct gifts to the Foundation Capital Campaign will allow the BADC to channel its resources away from mortgage payments and into its much-needed programs.

Further, contributing to our BADC Foundation Capital Campaign offers firms and individual lawyers alike opportunities for discounted memberships in the BADC. Donor forms attached describe these opportunities.  Additionally, the BADC, in close coordination with its Young Lawyers Section, has authorized the waiver of membership dues for the class of 2020 law graduates practicing in the District of Columbia and for the class of 2021 students attending law school in the District of Columbia, to enhance networking and mentoring opportunities in a socially distanced environment.

None of this would be possible without the support of you and DC's legal profession. Thank you to all who have already supported our efforts with your time, talent or treasure. Your generosity is fueling lasting relevance in our legal community and beyond. For those who are making year-end giving plans, we encourage you to consider a tax-deductible gift to the BADC Foundation Capital Campaign - either online (www.badc.org), or by check with the accompanying donor form(s).

The BADC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your contribution to the BADC Foundation Capital Campaign is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. No goods or services are provided in exchange for your donation.

Thank you! And safe holidays!
